About Poet Philip Hackett, Poet/Producer, The Poet’s Gallery in North Beach

This is an example of a WordPress page, you could edit this to put information about yourself or your site so readers know where you are coming from. You can create as many pages like this one or sub-pages as you like and manage all of your content inside of WordPress.

I continue producing poetry, painting, Photography, music and the other arts at up to 20 venues around the North Beach area in San Francisco. You can learn about our monthly events by e-mailing me at hackettphilip5@yahoo.com. I continue writing my own poetry on a daily basis, as I have been doing since high school days in my native city of Boston, Massachusetts. I derive a lot of my ideas from being on the road for twenty-five years in the U.S., the Pacific Islands, Western and Eastern Europe, and Mexico. I have had 20 books published, some of which are available at City Lights Books or by writing me c/o P.O. Box 330168, S.F., CA 94133. Hoping you had a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and a Happy New Year!

TOOK FIVE YEARS TO WRITE ELEVEN POEMS

THATS WHY I FIND IT EASIER TO TAKE AS MUCH CREDIT FOR “NORTHBEACH” POETS
      AS POSSIBLE.

I CAN’T SEEM TO PUBLISH ANYTHING OF REAL POETIC VALUE.

DAMN I WISH I COULD HAVE BLOWN KEROUK TO GET SO NORTHBEACH CREDIBILITY

  4. Please hand me a copy next time I see you at the Cafe Trieste. Thank you! Riki

    • Riki Chen

Received several of your books, most of which are no longer in print. They were a bit costly, but well worth the expense. I especially enjoyed reading your collection of haikus and tankas (in English and Japanese) and your chinese collection in English and Mandarin. Understand you hold a PhD in Engl. Lit. and that the Mayor of San Francisco set aside every July 25th as PHILIP HACKETT DAY.
Good luck with all your future endeavors as a poet and producer.

  33. Demarrius Price

    Hello sir,

My name is Demarrius Price, and I am an aspiring writer. I have a talent and love for writing poetry. My reason for writing you is because you seem well seasoned in the publishing industry. I almost got swindled by two (I think they are vanity publishing companies) publishing companies.
I would just like it if you could assist me, from author to new aspiring author, in following my dream. A dream of sharing my poetry with the world, and being rewarded through my fan’s devotion and sky rocketing sales.
My issue is I don’t know if I want to go ebooks, or hard book, self published, or through a publishing company. Because of school and associated loans, my money isnt where it needs to be, but I’m willing to invest the little that I have into my future. I just want your assistance in helping me to decide the safest route for trying to get my voice to be heard.

  37. Henry Kemp

Phillip you and your Family are a God send to this planet Earth!

  38. Joe Hackett

No one knows a brother more than his mother and brother. I am his youngest brother and sibling, Baby Joey. When I was eight or nine Phillip taught me how to box and condition myself, physically. Phillip, Billy, the middle sibling, and I were members of the Boys Cub in Southie (Boston). Spending time there was less congested than our “flat” in the D Street projects. We all were involved in the many activities offered there. We learned to swim, play basketball and baseball. We played checkers and chess. We went to overnight camp at Camp Milton, Camp Wing, and Duxbury Stockade. Phillip became a skilled boxer at 115lbs. He fought at the “Muni”, and held more than his own. I recall kids telling othe kids to not bother me because “He’s Hackett’s brother”. “Ya” for me!

All of our siblings attended Monsignor Patterson Catholic Elementary School, K-8. We three boys were alter boys at St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church. Billy and I served for only a few years. Phillip was a “lifer”! So much so that when he joined the army at age 18, he served as a Chaplain’s assistant.

The three of Us were Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Phillip was very serious at both. So much so, that he was anointed with both prestigious awards, Eagle Scout and “Ad Altera Dei”. The highest honors given to a Catholic Boy Scout. His Scout shirts were loaded down by the weight of all his medals. Billy and I were not so inclined to be as serious. Our tenure didn’t last long, at all.

The good thing about having Phillip as an older brother and Scout is that he took us outdoor camping in the Blue Hills, an hour train, trolley, and bus ride from the Projects in Southie. Just three boys camping in the Reservation for a couple of nights. Adventurous, for sure. Ten years later, I thanked my lucky stars for the opportunity to have gone camping with my Scout brother. During the summer between my junior and senior years at college, Phillip invited me to join him in Anchorage, Alaska. Eventually, he and I, found our way to Fairbanks, Alaska. There, we spent twenty long days and nights camping under the employment of the USA Bureau of Land Management.

We were hired as “firefighters”. We each had a polaski pick, “piss” bag, and a Buck knife. Daily, we would helicopter out of the camp site on the Salcha River and jumped off in remote areas 15-20 mile north of the camp. Just Phillip and me! What? As he said at the time, “Joey, can you believe that two guys from the D Street Projects in Southie are all alone in the middle of the last frontier.” Wild!
